ITALIAN ARCHITECTURE NOW
Balancing tradition, modernity and context.
This study-trip is specifically designed to give students of architecture and design an opportunity to learn about how new architecture in Italy is integrated in the historical and traditional context. The focus will be on visiting and experiencing key buildings – both historical and modern – to give students the opportunity to gain insight into how Italian architectural style has evolved from the past to the present while maintaining overall cohesiveness and continuity, which is a highly relevant issue for Indian Architects and Designers. The course has two main elements: the first, visits to selected examples of Italian architecture in the area around Maestre, Venice and Milan. These visits will help expand students’ knowledge of formal and underlying aspects of Italian architecture that leads to modern structures (or older buildings refurbished for modern usage) that blend in or resonate with the surrounding structures. The second element will be to gain an understanding of the basic theoretical principles of architecture followed by some of the leading architecture studios in Milan. Each studio will explain how various aspects – architectural, historical, philosophical, engineering and contextual – influence the design and execution process and determine the final outcome. The study trip will include a two day visit to Architecture Biennale 2018 in Venice.
